Subject: Fw: CO2 - opinion?

Anthony,

I got this from a friend (below). I wondered who could give me an intelligent (and scientific) reaction to the statements below.

My gut reaction was that this was a bit of a cop out from those who oppose doing anything to curtail global warming - in other words the message in a nutshell would read "since volcanoes produce so much CO2 and greenhouse effect, why bother reducing anything ourselves?" in other words an excuse to do nothing.

I also don't know if the statements below about the earth cooling instead of getting warmer is correct. There are plenty of scientists who publish very opposing views, and being a bit suspicious by nature, I thought of you as a possible source of a more scientific reaction than my personal gut feel.

thanks

KG

Professor Ian Plimer (a member of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Adelaide. He is also a joint member of the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering):

Okay, here's the bombshell. The volcanic eruption in Iceland, since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just FOUR DAYS, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet, all of you.

Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress, that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow, and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans, and all animal life.

I know, it's very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid's "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cents light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs...well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in just four days - yes - FOUR DAYS ONLY by that volcano in Iceland, has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud any one time - EVERY DAY.

I don't really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire YEARS on earth. Yes folks, Mt Pinatubo was active for over one year, think about it.

Of course I shouldn't spoil this touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.

And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.

Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you on the basis of the bogus ''human-caused'' climate change scenario.

Hey, isn't it interesting how they don't mention ''Global Warming'' any more, but just ''Climate Change'' - you know why? It's because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down.

And just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme (that whopping new tax)
imposed on you, that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won't stop any volcanoes from erupting, that's for sure.

But hey, relax, give the world a hug and have a nice day!

PS: I wonder if Iceland is buying carbon offsets?

Anthony Marr's reply:

This piece is illogical and contains a crucial factual error. It appears to be politically and/or financially motivated. At first I was a little puzzled by the incongruence between his credentials and his words, but "mining engineering" gave me a clue.

What he says is false, but even if true, so what? Here is an analogy: He owes the bank $10,000, and had been good in meeting his monthly payments, until suddenly, some hacker raised his debt figure to $20,000, and he says, "Well, the increase wiped out all the payments I've made. What's the point of keeping up with my payments now? I'm going to stop paying, and to hell with whatever bank will do about it."

He is wrong on another point. I, for one, still use the term "Global Warming" and will continue to do so. "Climate change" was chosen by George W. Bush to avoid having to say "warming", according to the dictates of his oily overlords. I do not oppose using the term "climate change", because the climate is changing. What I do oppose is the reason some people choose to use it rather than "global warming". "Global warming" refers to the global AVERAGE temperature, which has been steadily rising since the Industrial Revolution began. It is a consistent human error to say, "Global warming? What global warming?" whenever there is a local cold spell, while the rest of the world roasts. To then avoid using "global warming" is to succumb to this error. I deliberately use "global warming" and point out, p.s., "It is about the global AVERAGE temperature, and it has steadily been rising, and it has risen by about 0.8 degrees Celsius since 1880 - the demarkation year of the Industrial Revolution. This is diametrically opposed to his asserting that the Earth has "COOLED" by 0.7 degrees in the past century. EXXON alone has spent millions of dollars to refute global warming as a fact, and this is what EXXON would like you to believe, and sadly many do.

Plus, his logical facility is flawed, or at least compromised by, shall we say, non-scientific factors. Volcanoes have been blowing regularly and periodically since time immemorial, i.e. for billions of years. The 20th Century was no exception. He shoots his own foot by saying that there are 200 volcanoes spewing GHGs into the atmosphere every day, which ironically is true, but it has been true for millions of millennia. Mt. Pinatubo was big, but in the geological scheme of things, is nothing unusual or exceptional, while Mt. St. Helens is downright insignificant. Together, these volcanoes, past and present, do inject a steady stream of CO2 into the atmosphere, year in year out. But, as he also pointed out, plants perform photosynthesis, which absorbs CO2, thus controlling the CO2 concentration from running away, and maintains it steadily around 280ppm, which was the pre-industrial 280ppm atmosphere CO2 concentration we measured back then. In the context of global warming, what we are referring to is the EXTRA amount of CO2 that human activities pump into the atmosphere IN ADDITION TO the background 280ppm contributed by the volcanoes. It is ONLY in the 20th Century that the atmospheric CO2 concentration rose from the background 280ppm by 100ppm, or on average 1ppm per year, to over 380ppm by year 2000, and further to 390ppm by year 2011. Scientists know that this is unprecedented over the last millions of years, and so will be its climatic effect.

But because it is unprecedented, we can only educated-guess at what these effects will be, and so far, we have been UNDERESTIMATING these effects in most if not all of our predictions. Just google "faster than expected", or something similar, and you will see that it has become one of the most often iterated phrases straight from scientists' mouths, and it refers to global WARMING, NOT "COOLING". The big shocker was the 2007 Arctic sea ice melt down, which more than tripled the melt rate depicted in the worst case scenario presented in the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Report published in the same year. Further, google "glacier melt" and search for "images", and you will get more than an eyeful.

As for CO2 being non-poisonous, everyone knows this, as does everyone about CO2's role in photosynthesis. "Patronizing" comes to mind.

All on all, he is betraying science and truth for whatever he stands to gain. Or else, he can't even think logically. He may think that he can think straight, but I say he can't think around the corner. Nor 3-steps-ahead, which making me think that I should have no problem beating him in chess.

BAN SHARK FINS! - Vancouver media event, July 9, Sat.

Media Release
for immediate release

Vancouver should take the lead in banning shark fins in Canada and worldwide

Chinese Canadian author Anthony Marr, winner of the prestigious Henry Spira Activist Award at the 2010 Animal Rights National Conference in Washington DC (www.ARConference.org), will host a media demo in Chinatown followed by a 2-block guided tour of some of Vancouver's shark-fin hots spots. TV cameras will be led into shops where shark fins are openly sold.

Place:
at or near the Chinatown Pavilion on Pender and Carrall, Vancouver

Time:

Anthony Marr performed a similar operation in 1995/1996, then focusing on the traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) containing tiger bone, bear bile and rhino horn. This campaign went national, then international. Within 6 months, this operation forced a new federal law called WAPPRIITA, which banned the sale of any item containing endangered species ingredients (http://dearhomosapiens.blogspot.com/2011/05/prologue-8-bloody-superstition-and-new.html).

"It is now the turn for the sharks and sea horses," says Marr. "Due to the global Chinese demand for these 'products', the practice called 'shark finning', where fisherman cut off the fins and cast the still-alive sharks back into the water, has gone out of control, globally, involving even the Mafia. Many local shark populations have been decimated. Same can be said about the sea horses used in TCMs."

"As we speak," Marr adds, "Toronto is deliberating on banning shark fins, as is California, and anti-shark-fin demos have occurred in Hong Kong and even China itself, and Yao Ming has openly condemned shark-finning as cruel and unsustainable. Vancouver is the center of the Canada's shark-fin trade. Can we Vancouverites sit by and do nothing?"

Photobucket

When asked why he is trying to "ruin the Chinese reputation", Marr answers, "On the contrary, I am trying the save the Chinese reputation, which is right now being ruined due to the use of shark fins and sea horses."

Anthony Marr's response to "Geo-engineering? No Thanks!"

Photobucket

Shaun C.:

Geo-engineering? No thanks...

Anthony Marr:

Even if we stopped burning fossil fuels globally yesterday and use nothing but wind and solar, the CO2 already in the atmosphere (currently around 390ppm, up from 280ppm in 1880) will continue to heat the planet and acidify the oceans for centuries to come, and the planet will still roast. Scientists have determined that unless we could lower the atmospheric carbon concentration back down to 350ppm or below, we would not be able to escape runaway global heating, and millions of species will go extinct, possibly including our own. As well, direct cooling of the planet by other means will probably have to be called into play. If you have a better solution, please let us know.

Pearl L.:

Hi Anthony Marr. Have you considered reforestation, [which would be a direct consequence of humans readopting our evolutionary plant-based (frugivorous) diet] .. for CO2 absorption/sinks? Maybe you might clarify exactly what you're referring to with "geo-engineering". thanks.

Anthony Marr

Hi Pearl, definitely reforestation will help, but it won't be anywhere near enough. No doubt, healthy forests are net carbon sinks, but in their present states, even large areas of the Amazon rainforest have become net carbon emitters. Just yesterday, there is a new media article titled "Planting trees no magic bullet to fight global warming". And even if we could massively reforest, we would still be suffering a net loss due to industrial pressure (e.g. the Alberta tar sands mining, which necessitate removal by the thousands of sq.mi. of the overlying boreal forests which are carbon sinks. plus releasing huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. In the planetary system, oceanic phyto-plankton is a main carbon sink, but ocean-acidification, caused by high carbon content, has impacted negatively on it already; so the potential solutions are currently being overwhelmed by the problem. 251 million years ago, the End-Permian mass extinction, caused indeed by the global average temperature increasing by as much as 16C, wiped out 75% of all land species and 95% of all marine species, including mosts of the phytoplankton species. Further, there isn't much time for us to debate, because at the present rate, the atmospheric carbon content increase by 1ppm per year. The longer we delay, the worse the problem will get.

In terms of geo-engineering (some call it "terraforming"), the technology most counted on is ACCS (Atmospheric Carbon Capture and Sequestration), which constitutes millions of carbon absorbers deployed around the world. Forests can be considered one such system, but, as I pointed out, not half enough. So, even if we count on forests, we still have to supplement them with ACCS, for which there are lots of theories. But this little story will illustrate the desperation of the situation. The British billionaire Richard Branson has for years offered a $25million reward to anyone coming up with a working model of an ACCS system. So far, no one has claimed it. What does this tell us? Basically, we have no working solution, while the carbon concentration increases by 1ppm per year, and the longer we resist finding a solution to the problem, the more serious the situation will get. Other techniques include shielding the planet with an orbital belt of solar heat absorbing/reflecting material, and increasing the albedo (reflectivity) of Earth's surface, e.g. painting all roofs white.

Also, we have to find some way to de-acidify the oceans. Due to ocean acidification, the End-Permian mass extinction mentioned above wiped out ALL the corals. The present day corals were re-evolved anew in first the 10 million years of the succeeding Triassic period. Unless we could some how reduce the acidity of the present-day oceans, ALL the corals will be wiped out, again. Since plankton is the foundation of the marine food pyramid, if the plankton goes, so will the fish and marine mammals, including the seals, dolphins and whales. This too is geo-engineering. Do we have a working model right now? Not that I know of.

As I said, if anyhone has a better idea, please share it with us, but the most brilliant technological minds have been working on the problem for years, so, lay people will likely not come up with anything new.

Next comes an even more daunting problem. Where do we find the money for these tasks. Bear in mind that a global ACCS system will not produce ANY immediate financial pay off (profit), so, no industry will touch it, nor will any national government, because each dollar sunk into ACCS is one dollar removed from, say the military. And to solve these problems will require not a few dollars, but over $1 trillion in the first decade alone. So, where does this money come from? This I have never read anywhere, so, I have to propose it. Good thing I mentioned the military, because this is the only place I can think of where the money can come from. Current, the world is collectively spending $1.5 trillion a year on military expenditure. If all nations on Earth agree to cut their own military by 10% a year over the next decade, we'd have $1.5 trillion this decade to solve our planet's environmental problems, for the long term survival of life on Earth.

Outlines of Anthony Marr's 6 speeches @ the 2011 Animal Rights National Conference.

Photobucket

7/22, 9:20 AM: New Issues for Animal Liberation (plenary speech)

Aniaml liberation of course means freeing animals from cages, and from direct abuse, but it also means freeing them from the ultimate denial of their most basic right, the right to exist. Extinction. There are 3 things that threaten their survival: direct killing, direct destruction of habitat, and the upcoming devastating effects of runaway climate change. Mass extinction due to climate change has occurred at least once before - the End-Permian Extinction 251 million years ago, which exterminated 85% of all species on Earth. The current conditions are right for another one. Does "L.H." mean anything to you? If not, and even if it does, you must hear what Anthony Marr has to say about it.

Photobucket

7/22, 11:32 AM: Individual Activism

Anthony Marr has been described as a "one man revolution" by academics aware of his revolutionary thinking, speaking and writing, and a "one man wrecking crew" by the media that covered his anti-hunting road tour in which he debated large groups of hunters up to 120 at a time over 30 times throughout British Columbia over a period of 2 months. One way or another, Anthony Marr is an individual activist, which most activists are in their own beginnings. He was honored with the Henry Spira Grassroots Activist Award at the AR2010 conference, not for no reason.

Photobucket

7/22, 5:04 PM: Wildlife Campaign Reports

Wildlife is the Cinderella of the Animal Right's movement, as well as in law, which gives domestic animals a small through measurable amount of protection, but practically none for wild animals. Just as tough is the Anti-Hunting movement, which few animal rights activists take on. And even fewer ARAs work on wild habitat preservation, leaving it to the environmentalists. Anthony Marr will speak on both killing and habitat destruction, and what is being done to counteract them.

Photobucket

7/23, 4:01 PM: Global Issues Affecting Animals

Other than global climate change, which will affect animals worldwide big time, the leading global issues affecting animals include habitat destruction, deforestation, desertification, ocean acidification, hunting, poaching, overfishing, the wildlife trade, feed-shortage for domestic animals, the need to downsize the animal industry, and the possible rise of abusive politicians like Sarah Palin.

7/24, 4:02 PM: Forging Coalitions
Anthony Marr is the founder and president of the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition (GAHC), and of course the coalition had to be forged, and is still being forged. In just a year and a half, the online membership of the Coalition has grown to 5400, and through his organizing and executing his 7 CARE tours, Anthony Marr has developed a direct personal contact list of well over 1000 leading ARAs, all of whom he has met and worked with in the course of his 7 Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions (CARE-tours).

Photobucket

7/24, 5:02 PM: Movement Networking

Since 2003, Anthony Marr has conducted 7 Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions (CARE tours), each covering 30-44 states in 4-7 months. In the course of organizing and executing these tour, he has directly communicated with thousands of key people online, and met and worked with hundreds of key activists in real life. As well, he has spoken at the AR Conference every year since 2004, where networking effortlessly take place.

One of the prevailing foci of the CARE tours is Anti-Hunting, which has led him into many a den of iniquity (hunting stores) from coast to coast. This is one of the greatest (worst) one of them all.

Wounded geese rain down from the sky; others limp away, just, to die a few miles away. Entire flocks are wiped out at a time.
